Last week’s topic was Halloween. This week’s topic is crosswalks.
Every morning, I walk to the Metro, which I then take to work. To get to the Metro from my house, I have to cross a relatively busy street with a crosswalk. There is also a giant speed "hump" immediately after the crosswalk.
The SWPLs (swipples) in my neighborhood will wear out their brake pads to stop for me in the crosswalk. Swipples love public transportation, but they don’t actually use it. The fact that I’m walking puts me on the moral high-ground in contrast to the swipple who is lazily (and pollutingly) driving to work. Thus, if I even look at the crosswalk, the swipple slams on the brakes, to assuage the shame caused by commuting by car.
About 30% of the blacks in the neighborhood behave the same way. The other 70% will run me down. The road is two lanes. A couple times, a swipple has stopped for me in the first lane. Then, I start crossing and, as I’m getting to the second lane, a black person in another car in the far lane nearly runs me down. Since the speed hump follows the crosswalk, trying to run me down puts a strain on the car, which nearly gets airborne from the hump.
The swipples overtly disapprove of any white person who doesn’t stop at the crosswalk – this class consists almost exclusively of tourists. The swipples studiously avoiding noticing any black people who don’t stop at the crosswalk.
