Instead I’ll just observe that Kling, while not nostalgic for the massive disenfranchisement of African-Americans, seems in practice to be blind to the interests of non-whites, of gays and lesbians, and of women.
After the American empire falls, I can imagine a world in which barely literate people roam the wreckage of civilization eating canned goods since they can’t grow any food their own. In this world, everyone will be equally miserable – and hence it will be better than the modern world according to Yglesias. Matthew Yglesias will consider you a racist if you want to return to civilization.
Note that "progress" for Yglesias is completely one-dimensional. Epic levels of societal decay could have taken place, but if everyone gets equal privileges from the State, things are necessarily better. Are the schools of modern Baltimore better than the schools of the ’40s? Asking this question is evidence that you’re "blind to the interests of non-whites."
