Quote of the day

Here (all worth reading):

Stupid people will be in charge, only to be replaced by ever-stupider people. You will live in a world without kings, only princes in whom our faith is shattered

How gloomy. There are some great observations there, though. A couple quibbles:

    1) I don’t agree with his peak oil pessimism. Lots of interesting innovation will occur if and when the price of petrol hits $50 a gallon.

    2) The observations about how it’s getting harder to see your life as a “story” seem true. I have always struggled with that, and it’s not getting any easier. One caveat, though: the progressive anti-crimethink modules we carry around with us, squelching creative thought about, say, hbd issues and the nature of virtue, make constructing a story that much more difficult. Clear thinking has always taken courage, as we are social animals and seek approval as much as truth even in the best case. If you manage to turn off the modules, though, your story starts to make more sense.

Cool to see that Coupland is still an interesting social commentator. He and I were born the same year (though on opposite sides of the US-Canadian border and the North American continent), and I remember thinking that Generation X identified a lot of phenomena I was kind of aware of but hadn’t seen mentioned in print previously. Reading that book in the early 90s, I felt a huge shock of recognition: ambivalent tidings from a fellow “poverty jet setter”.
