Why’s this so absurd? Is not being a cute stewardess a good way to land a pilot as a husband? Airline pilots are VERY high status, combining social and economic status comparable to a doctor with being a bit of a romantic figure in the eyes of a lot of people.

  2. Jehu says:

Pilots are usually very smart guys, comparable to doctors, lawyers, engineers, and the like. They’re unlikely to marry someone that they can’t at least delude themselves into thinking is within a sigma or so of themselves in terms of mental horsepower. A bachelor’s degree is a signalling device and a status marker. Never heard of an Mrs degree?

Know any pilots? I know two personally. Pilot #1 is married to a dermatologist, pilot #2 is married to a History PhD. If we step down the ladder a little to aircraft mechanic, I know a couple of them, married to teacher and nurse respectively. People generally marry very close to their own social station, probably moreso now than ever. The assortive mating research in ‘The Bell Curve’ will give you some data to put flesh on these anecdotal bones.
