Randoms of the day

The life of a French civil servant.

Detroit’s population fell dramatically. How do city officials react?

The decline, the fastest in city history, shocked local officials, who had expected a number closer to 800,000. Mayor Dave Bing said the city would seek a recount.

"If we could go out and identify another 40,000 people that were missed, and it brings us over the threshold of 750,000, that would make a difference from what we can get from the federal and state government," Mr. Bing said at a news conference Tuesday.

That about sums it up, doesn’t it?

Sometimes I imagine what it would be like to be able to go back in time and talk to historical figures about what the present is like. Imagine, for example, if you could tell Gibbon about the modern US military. I’d start with this scenario:

“You are the Executive Officer of your unit. While shopping at the local mall over the weekend, you observe two junior male Marines in appropriate civilian attire assigned to your unit kissing and hugging in the food court.

New blog that looks interesting.

Is it possible to explain this fact in a non-racist way?

TAS who hasn’t blogged in a while, asks an interesting question.

A man who studied the Roman Empire would probably be far more surprised by the Hot Dog on a Stick behind these men.

    Re: PR & pensioners.

Sure. PR is US territory, cheap to live, nice weather (important if your joints are effed) and probably the best place to find LBFM in the US. That last is just a guess.

I am grappling with the problem you allude to in your comment on Puerto Rico. How do you parse this comment?

A local San Diego official noted on the radio this morning that the census has confirmed that San Diego county is now a majority-minority county. According to him the definition of such a demographic mix is that there are now more members of minority groups then there are caucasians in the county.

I’ve no idea what the import of this statistic may be but it seemed to be a big deal.

“Is it possible to explain this fact in a non-racist way?”

Racism against Hispanic Americans (probably caused by the Tea Party or Sarah Palin) causes them to be more vulnerable to long term disability. This effect is more pronounced in areas with historically oppressed minorities.

    What’s my prize?

One important idea to uphold is that nothing true is racist.
