On Steve Jobs. Interestingly, basically everyone I’ve read seems to have loved Jobs – Half Sigma and Vox excepted.

DC has a very onerous process ("which includes various fees, five hours of training, multiple visits to government offices, fingerprinting, and recurring background checks") for obtaining a license to own a gun. Generally, I like an armed citizenry, however given DC’s particular population, I think this onerous process is a near perfect policy. In effect, it means that only conscientious and intelligent citizens (cough, cough) can legally own guns.

Ferd notes that there are "More black men in prison today then were enslaved before the Civil War." As I’ve said before, meaningfully ending slavery is quite hard.

I know I get criticized every time I point out that progressives/liberals are communists, but whenever they get together to make a big list of demands, the demands look an awful lot like Commie demands (HT: Chuck).

The Telegraph’s obit makes it pretty clear that Jobs was a shit; he was, though, a shit with a considerable gift for consumer electronics.

“Abolition of property in land and application of all rents of land to public purposes.
A heavy progressive or graduated income tax.
Abolition of all right of inheritance.
Confiscation of the property of all emigrants and rebels.
Centralisation of credit in the hands of the State, by means of a national bank with State capital and an exclusive monopoly.
Centralisation of the means of communication and transport in the hands of the State.
Extension of factories and instruments of production owned by the State; the bringing into cultivation of waste-lands, and the improvement of the soil generally in accordance with a common plan.
Equal liability of all to labour. Establishment of industrial armies, especially for agriculture.
Combination of agriculture with manufacturing industries; gradual abolition of the distinction between town and country, by a more equitable distribution of the population over the country.
Free education for all children in public schools. Abolition of children’s factory labour in its present form. Combination of education with industrial production.”

Similar, but not the same. The big difference is “Equal liability of all to labour.” That is, slave labor. The occupy list would be better phrased as “equal entitlement of all to sloth”.

Are the stupid and lazy notably incapable of getting guns in DC? The hoops apply only to those who care enough to jump through them. As usual, the red giant state can disrupt the law abiding without much inconveniencing the criminal.

The stupid and lazy are incapable of getting legal guns in DC. With emphasis on the legal part. Alas, I harbor no illusions about the illegal sort.

You don’t need an onerous process for this to happen. You just need *a* process.

Almost everyone that we have an interest in not having a legal gun in DC already has a criminal record. If you could reduce the crime rate to the average level committed by CCW holders, you’d win a Peace Prize (if such prizes still actually mean anything). Florida-style CCW issuance guidelines would be perfectly adequate for DC.
Remember that even the knowledge that another person might have a legit CCW permit helps to protect you by introducing strategic uncertainty among the wicked.

My favorite is demand 11 – eliminate all debt everywhere from “The Books”. This fits in great with Demand 12 to outlaw the credit rating agencies, because if you get rid of all the debt, what’s left to rate? Demand nine is likewise not consistent with realistically accomplishing the other demands, like number four.

But back to 11: Well, you know, every debt liability for one party is an asset for somebody else, so… winners and losers. Wait, maybe you don’t quite mean it, does that include everybody’s bank accounts and legal claims too? Government Pension and Trust funds

And I don’t mean debt that is in default, I mean all debt on the entire planet period.

Oh, I see … You haven’t thought this through very much, have you? But if you do ban future debt too, and if the Fed does $100 Trillion in QE-Infinity you might get your wish in an Infinite-Jubilee. People with massive debts will be intermediate winners, but owners of scarce commodities will be the big winners – are you sure you want to go there, because who are the Goldbugs and what will they do with their new wealth and power? They might just favor the strict enforcement of debt obligations – and in gold too.

I’m sure this won’t shock anyone here but, “Occupy Wall Street” was adopted and promoted by adbusters.

Adbusters is a project funded by the tides foundation.

And the Tides foundation gets it money from…
    The Rockefellers (scroll down)

Also, Soros and others, but you get the point.

  8. Here’s a list that members of the new Occupy Reality movement should memorize:

    1. Secure Borders (border fence, ground penetrating radar, floodlights)

    2. Secure Prisons (physical solitary with extensive closed circuit TV contact with non-ex-convict friends and family)

    3. Freedom of Speech (abolition of “hate speech” laws)

    4. Freedom of Association (abolition of anti-discrimination laws affecting private companies, home sales, etc.)

    5. Public Meritocracy (abolition of affirmative action laws for taxpayer-supported institutions)

    6. Private Accountability (French-style fraudulent bankruptcy law allowing bankruptcy judge to ban corporate officers from serving in such offices, or on boards of directors, for life)

Of course, I just launched Occupy Reality about ten seconds ago, so it’s not very famous yet. I just thought I’d like to look at a nice short list of reasonable demands for a change.

  9. Progressives are not commies.

Commies propose the government run everything by a central plan. Progressives propose the government run everything with no plan at all.

Commies believe that underdevelopment is a sin committed by wealthy capitalists against poor people, and propose the government fix this by commanding stuff to be developed. Progressives believe that development is a sin committed by wealthy capitalists against Gaea and the trees, and propose to fix this by prohibiting stuff from being developed.

Communists believe in democracy, and indeed believe in it so much that they will shoot anyone who votes incorrectly. Progressives believe in democracy, and if large numbers of people keep voting incorrectly, will import a foreign underclass to outvote them.

Check out the links at my site, DC Handgun Info. I’m a gun nut because two associates of mine were killed and they could not defend themselves. One was carjacked by a man suspected of FOUR other murders.

  11. “In effect, it means that only conscientious and intelligent citizens (cough, cough) can legally own guns.”

Zero concealed carry in D.C. per the police Gun Registration Unit means it’s still darn dangerous on the streets. Only “hot burglaries”/home invasions are a bit more dangerous for the bad guys. Check out my blog for links on how to stay safe and legal in D.C. if you live there…

    My favorite democratic politician:

Great facial expressions when he says, “the will of the people is the will of God in democracy.”

I give a lot of honor to the leader of the True Finns. Notice how he effortlessly brushes aside the hostile interviewer looking to get him to fess up to wanting a crisis while managing to address us, the audience, like we’re mature adults in possession of at least half a brain.
