Randoms of the day

I was going to link to this post from Ilkka, but Aretae beat me to it:

If a postmodernist became mentally ill, how could you even tell?

Samson’s Jawbone has some thoughts on the the W-force.

Bryan Caplan criticizes Albert Jay Nock’s view of war. In general, if you disagree with Nock, you’re almost certainly wrong. Caplan believes that it’s really hard to get people to fight wars, which is why they’re so rare throughout human history, er . . . nevermind, I don’t really follow his argument.

Oriental Right (previously known as The Asian of Reason) has my favorite take on the Chinese mother article so far, including:

Asian parenting works–provided that that the child in question is reasonably gifted. And it works especially well with kids of extraordinary ability. The effectiveness of Asian parenting correlates with the IQ of the child in question. AAK, being extremely intelligent– has benefited from Asian parenting. I’ve noticed that people without the necessary innate factors who become subjected to Asian parenting turn out to be–to put it bluntly–fuck ups.

Bruce Charlton says that secular utilitarians should mourn the end of colonialism. I think that basically everyone should morn the end of colonialism.

Quora apparently has a lame hate speech policy.

A local DC blog is asking readers for ideas on how to reduce violent crime in PG county. I suspect hilarity to ensue.

Finally, the WSJ has an op-ed on man-hating:

And so it goes these days, when almost any man who has anything to do with a child can find himself suspected of being a creep. I call it "Worst-First" thinking: Gripped by pedophile panic, we jump to the very worst, even least likely, conclusion first. Then we congratulate ourselves for being so vigilant.

Consider the Iowa daycare center where Nichole Adkins works. The one male aide employed there, she told me in an interview, is not allowed to change diapers. "In fact," Ms. Adkins said, "he has been asked to leave the classroom when diapering was happening."

Apropos of the induplicable Nock, you might enjoy reading a little, or a little about, Christopher Dawson, or perhaps at least Russell Hittenger, “Christopher Dawson on Technology and the Demise of Liberalism”:

“…Dawson was on the right track when he called our attention to the dominion of technology, and why it has changed the nature of the game. As a cultural historian, Dawson understood that the core of a culture is found once we locate the thing that the culture would never relinquish, or even imagine itself relinquishing. I submit that in our case it is not individual liberty, or sex, and certainly not religion. It is not even the machine. Rather, it is the machine insofar as it promises an activity superior to the human act.”

  2. Yep… just got banned.

Apparently China isn’t far enough to escape the Feminazi reach.

What’s your favorite Nock book? I just grabbed Our Enemy, the State from mises.org (they’re putting out more and more books in epub format now). Is that a good place to start?
